How to Breed Axolotls in Minecraft (Blue Axolotl Guide)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Feed two axolotls a bucket of tropical fish each and they enter love mode: a baby spawns with 1-7 XP. Every baby has a 1 in 1,200 chance to be the ultra-rare blue variant - the ONLY way to get one. Parents need 5 minutes between breeds in Java (1 minute in Bedrock).

What you need

Step by step

  1. Catch your axolotls. Scoop them with a water bucket in lush caves - they come in pink, brown, gold, cyan and wild. Two is the minimum breeding pair.
  2. Farm tropical fish. Find them in warm oceans, lush caves and mangrove swamps, and catch each one ALIVE with a water bucket. Raw or cooked tropical fish does NOT work - only living ones in buckets.
  3. Set up a pool. Axolotls need water: dig a breeding pond near your base, at least a few blocks deep, with no open route to the sea.
  4. Feed one bucket of tropical fish to each parent. Hearts appear, they swim together, and a baby axolotl spawns with a puff of XP.
  5. Chase the blue one. Each baby rolls a 1/1200 chance for the blue variant; otherwise it inherits a random parent's color. Blue never spawns naturally - breeding is the only path.
  6. Speed up the grind: babies take 20 minutes to grow, but each bucket of tropical fish fed to a baby cuts 10% off the remaining time. In Bedrock parents can rebreed after just 1 minute.

Java vs Bedrock

Follow range differs: axolotls follow bucket-holders within 10 blocks in Java, 16 in Bedrock. Rebreed cooldown is 5 minutes in Java vs 1 minute in Bedrock - Bedrock is the faster blue-farm platform. One trap in both: picking up a fed axolotl before it mates resets its willingness, so feed again if you bucket it mid-courtship.

Versions: Axolotls and the blue variant arrived in Caves & Cliffs Part I (1.17, 2021). Before 1.17.1 the blue one was even rarer in practice; the 1/1200 breeding chance has been stable since.

Frequently asked questions

Can blue axolotls spawn naturally?

No - wild lush-cave spawns are only pink, brown, gold, cyan and wild. Blue exists exclusively as a 1/1200 breeding roll, which is what makes it the game's classic flex pet.

Do two blue parents guarantee blue babies?

No - even two blue parents produce a random parent's color UNLESS the baby hits the 1/1200 blue roll. Every baby rolls blue independently, whatever the parents look like.

Why won't my axolotls breed?

Three usual suspects: you fed raw tropical fish instead of a living bucket; the parents are still on cooldown (5 min Java / 1 min Bedrock); or you bucketed a fed axolotl before it reached its mate, which resets its willingness - feed it again.
