How to Breed Goats in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Wheat (2 per breeding)
- 2 goats
- A pen with a roof or very tall walls
Step by step
- Find goats in mountain biomes: jagged peaks, frozen peaks and snowy slopes.
- Grow wheat from seeds, hold it so goats follow you, and pen two of them in. Goats jump up to 10 blocks high, so build tall walls or a roof.
- Feed wheat to each goat: hearts appear and a kid spawns, plus 1-7 XP.
- The parents can breed again after 5 minutes (1 minute in Bedrock). Kids grow up in 20 minutes; each wheat you feed a kid cuts the remaining time by 10%.
- Milk adults with a bucket like cows. For goat horns, let goats ram into solid blocks such as stone or logs - they drop up to two horns that never regrow.
Java vs Bedrock
Breeding works the same in Java and Bedrock except the parents' cooldown: 5 minutes in Java, 1 minute in Bedrock. Two screaming parents always produce a screaming kid in Java, and 98% of the time in Bedrock.
Versions: Goats were added in Caves & Cliffs Part I (1.17, June 2021). Screaming goats - called screamer goats in Bedrock - arrived with them, with the same 2% natural chance.
Frequently asked questions
How do I get a screaming goat?
Any naturally spawned or bred goat has a 2% chance of being a screamer. Breeding a screaming goat with a normal one raises the kid's odds to about 50%; two screaming parents make it 100% in Java and 98% in Bedrock.
How do I get goat horns?
When a goat rams and hits a solid block like stone, packed ice, iron ore, copper ore, emerald ore or logs, it can drop a horn. Screaming goats ram far more often and have their own four horn sounds, so breed screamers for faster horns.
Do goats attack players?
They do not chase you, but a stationary player can be chosen as a ramming target and knocked back several blocks - deadly near a cliff edge. Keep moving around goats.
