How to Breed Rabbits in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Carrots, golden carrots or dandelions
- 2 rabbits
- A 2-block-high pen or leads
Step by step
- Find rabbits in deserts, flower forests, taigas, groves and snowy biomes - coat color matches the biome.
- Approach slowly holding a carrot, golden carrot or dandelion: rabbits run from players who are not holding their food, so sneak up and let them come to you.
- Lure two into a pen. Rabbits jump over 1-block fences, so use walls 2 blocks high or keep them on leads.
- Feed one item to each rabbit: hearts appear and a kit spawns, plus 1-7 XP.
- The parents can breed again after 5 minutes (1 minute in Bedrock). Kits grow up in 20 minutes; each carrot or dandelion you feed a kit cuts the remaining time by 10%. Harvest adults for raw rabbit, rabbit hide and the rare rabbit's foot.
Java vs Bedrock
Breeding works the same in Java and Bedrock except the parents' cooldown: 5 minutes in Java, 1 minute in Bedrock. Rabbits always flee from players not holding a breeding item in both editions.
Versions: Rabbits were added in The Bountiful Update (1.8, September 2014). Dandelions have worked as a breeding item from the start; golden carrots count too, though they are a waste of gold.
Frequently asked questions
Why do rabbits keep running away from me?
Rabbits flee from any player within about 8 blocks unless that player is holding a carrot, golden carrot or dandelion. Hold the food, sneak, and stand still until they hop over.
What is the rabbit's foot for?
Rabbit's foot is a rare drop used to brew the Potion of Leaping (jump boost). A rabbit farm with the Looting III enchantment is the reliable way to stockpile them.
Can I breed a killer bunny?
No. The killer bunny is a hostile variant that only exists in Java Edition via commands - it never spawns naturally and cannot be bred.
