How to Breed Wolves in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Tame two adult wolves, make sure both are standing and at full health, then feed each a piece of meat. Hearts appear and a puppy is born. Java wolves can breed again after 5 minutes; Bedrock wolves after 1 minute.

What you need

2 tamed, standing adult wolves at full health
At least 2 pieces of meat (raw or cooked; rotten flesh also works)
Bones to tame wild wolves first

Step by step

Tame two wolves with bones. Wild wolves cannot breed, even if feeding them triggers hearts in Java.
Make both tamed wolves stand by using them if they are sitting; two sitting wolves cannot breed.
Heal them to full health with meat first. Then feed each wolf a piece of meat, including raw chicken or rotten flesh, to enter love mode.
Keep them close until a puppy appears. Its coat variant is chosen from one of the parents; its collar color may mix their collar colors.
Wait before breeding again: 5 minutes in Java Edition and 1 minute in Bedrock Edition.
The puppy grows up in 20 minutes. Feed it meat to cut 10% of its remaining growth time per feeding.

Java vs Bedrock

Java and Bedrock both require two tamed wolves at full health and standing. The breeding cooldown is 5 minutes in Java and 1 minute in Bedrock. Java also accepts rabbit stew and fish for breeding.

Versions: Wolves have been tameable and breedable since early Minecraft. Coat variants depend on the parents; breeding mechanics and accepted foods vary slightly by edition.

Frequently asked questions

Why will my wolves not breed?

They must both be tamed, standing rather than sitting, and at full health. Heal them first and check their breeding cooldown: 5 minutes in Java, 1 minute in Bedrock.

Can wild wolves breed in Minecraft?

No. Tame both wolves first with bones. In Java, feeding an untamed wolf may show love-mode hearts, but it will not seek a partner or breed.

How long does a wolf puppy take to grow?

20 minutes without feeding. Each piece of meat cuts 10% of the remaining growth time.
