How to Find Dripstone Caves in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Explore underground far inland, away from oceans and coasts. Dripstone caves can generate at any altitude and contain dripstone blocks, stalactites and stalagmites. Pointed dripstone alone is not proof of the biome, since it also occurs elsewhere.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Search inland: dripstone caves generate where continentalness is high - far from oceans and coasts. They essentially never appear under ocean biomes.
  2. Explore inland cave systems: elevated mountain valleys can indicate the inland terrain where dripstone caves generate. There is no fixed search height, and a mountain does not guarantee a dripstone cave.
  3. Do not rule out humid terrain: although lush caves often occur below humid biomes, dripstone caves can replace them when those areas are far inland.
  4. Look for widespread dripstone blocks, hanging stalactites, rising stalagmites and small water wells. Pointed dripstone also generates outside this biome, including in trial chambers, so a lone spike is not enough to identify it.
  5. Look for copper ore: dripstone caves generate larger copper ore blobs than other biomes. This does not mean that every deposit is large or that large ore veins are exclusive to this biome.
  6. Watch your head - and feet: falling stalactites hurt, and landing on a stalagmite deals heavy fall damage. Never dig straight up or down here.
  7. Grow pointed dripstone by hanging it directly under a dripstone block with a water source above that block. For a simple lava farm, put a lava source above a support block, hang 1 pointed dripstone below it, and place an empty cauldron directly beneath the tip with only air between them. Lava fills the cauldron over time but does not grow the dripstone.
  8. Watch the aquifers: drowned can spawn in the water inside dripstone caves. Do not assume an underwater passage is safe.

Java vs Bedrock

Both editions have dripstone caves and larger copper ore blobs in this biome. For dripstone growth, use a water source above a dripstone block; Java also supports a waterlogged block there. An air-only path from the tip to a cauldron works in both editions.

Frequently asked questions

How do you find a dripstone cave in Minecraft?

Explore underground far inland, away from coasts. Look for widespread dripstone blocks, stalactites, stalagmites and small water wells. There is no fixed altitude to search, and an isolated pointed dripstone formation may occur outside the biome.

What is special about dripstone caves?

They contain extensive dripstone formations, generate larger copper ore blobs than other biomes, and allow drowned to spawn in their aquifers. Pointed dripstone can also be used in a renewable lava farm with a lava source, support block and cauldron.

Do dripstone caves spawn under oceans?

Dripstone caves favor high continentalness, so they are essentially never found beneath ocean biomes or bordering a coast. Far inland, they can generate even below humid terrain where lush caves would otherwise occur.

Can stalactites kill you?

Yes - a falling stalactite deals real damage, and falling onto a stalagmite multiplies fall damage. Mine stalactites from the side and never stand directly under one you break.
