How to Get Flowers in Minecraft (Small and Tall)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Bone meal (optional)
- Emerald (for trading)
Step by step
- Look in plains, forests, flower forests, meadows and most other biomes with grass. Dandelions and poppies are twice as common in jungles, bamboo jungles, sparse jungles and savannas.
- Break a flower with any item or by hand. It drops itself.
- Use bone meal on a grass block: flowers can replace short grass on the targeted block and adjacent grass in a 15x5x15 area in Java Edition (7x5x7 in Bedrock Edition). The kind depends on the biome.
- For tall flowers (peonies, lilacs, rose bushes, sunflowers) use bone meal on the flower itself: it drops a copy. Bone meal on grass cannot make them.
- Alternatively buy 1 small flower for 1 emerald from a wandering trader (not wither roses, torchflowers, closed eyeblossoms or tall flowers).
- Kill an iron golem for 0-2 poppies, or an enderman holding a flower to get it.
- Plant them on grass blocks, dirt, coarse dirt, rooted dirt, farmland, podzol, mycelium, moss blocks, pale moss blocks, mud or muddy mangrove roots.
Java vs Bedrock
In Bedrock Edition, bone meal on a small flower grows more of its kind on adjacent grass. Bone meal on grass only generates dandelions there.
Versions: Wither roses can also be planted on netherrack or soul sand (and soul soil in Java Edition).
Frequently asked questions
How do I get tall flowers?
Use bone meal on an existing tall flower to make it drop a copy. This is the only renewable way.

Wither roses, torchflowers, pitcher plants and golden dandelions.
What can flowers be used for?
Most can be crafted into dyes, all small flowers into suspicious stew, and bees use most to make honey.
