How to Get a Sculk Sensor in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Silk Touch hoe (fastest + required for the drop)
- Wool blocks (safe movement)
- Night vision / torches for the deep dark
Step by step
- Find the deep dark: the sculk-covered biome deep underground, usually under mountainous areas - ancient cities generate inside it.
- Sneak everywhere: sculk sensors detect your steps and pass player vibrations to sculk shriekers - three shrieker warnings summon the warden.
- Place wool as you go: wool blocks and carpets block vibrations, so lay a wool path to move safely and isolate sensors you want to harvest.
- Bring a Silk Touch hoe: hoes break sculk sensors fastest, and only Silk Touch makes the block drop itself - otherwise you get just 5 experience.
- Loot ancient cities too: sensors generate throughout the city, often right next to chests full of echo shards, enchanted golden apples and Swift Sneak books.
- Use it at home: a sculk sensor detects vibrations in an 8-block sphere - walking, placing, breaking, projectiles, pistons - and outputs a redstone signal scaled by distance.
- Filter the signal: craft it with three amethyst shards into a calibrated sculk sensor, which listens to one specific vibration frequency set by a redstone input.
- Extend the range: a block of amethyst next to a sensor re-emits detected vibrations, letting you relay events to sensors farther away.
Java vs Bedrock
Generation, behavior and redstone output are the same in Java and Bedrock. Wool occlusion, sneaking and the 8-block range work identically; both editions also share the amethyst vibration relay added in 1.20.
Versions: Added in 1.17 (20w49a) but unobtainable in Survival until 1.19, when the deep dark and ancient cities arrived. The amethyst relay came in 1.20; calibrated sculk sensors in 1.20 as well (sculk sensor + 3 amethyst shards).
Frequently asked questions
How do you pick up a sculk sensor in Minecraft?
Mine it with any Silk Touch tool - a hoe is fastest. Without Silk Touch it shatters and drops only 5 experience points, so enchant before heading to the deep dark.
How far can a sculk sensor detect in Minecraft?
Eight blocks in a spherical radius. The redstone output scales with distance - a vibration right next to it gives near-full strength 15, falling toward 1 at the edge of range.
How do you stop sculk sensors from detecting you?
Sneak - moving while crouched makes no vibrations. You can also walk on wool or carpet, place wool between yourself and the sensor, or break the sensors first; wool blocks fully block the signal path.
