Step by step

Find cows or mooshrooms.
Kill one. It always drops 1-3 raw beef: 1-4 with Looting I, 1-5 with Looting II, 1-6 with Looting III.
Cook the raw beef in a furnace, smoker or campfire. Each steak taken from a furnace output gives 0.35 experience.
For a shortcut, kill the cow while it is on fire or with a Fire Aspect weapon: it drops steak directly.
Eat steak (1.6 seconds) for 8 hunger and 12.8 saturation. Steak and cooked porkchops restore the most hunger of any stackable food.
Use steak to breed and heal tamed wolves.
