How to Get a Straw Bed in Minecraft (26.3)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 3 hay bales in a row to get 4 straw beds - the single-use bed that lets you sleep through the night WITHOUT resetting your spawn point. They also generate naturally in abandoned camps. Added in Java 26.3 and Bedrock's Drop 3 of 2026.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Craft it: place 3 hay bales in a horizontal row on the crafting table to get 4 straw beds. Hay bales come from 9 wheat each, so one bed costs under 7 wheat.
  2. Find them in the world: straw beds generate naturally in abandoned camps, the new 26.x structure, and can appear in their barrels too.
  3. Use it as a disposable bed: sleeping in a straw bed skips the night and clears the weather, but it does NOT reset your spawn point - your real bed at home stays your respawn.
  4. Expect it to break: a straw bed is single-use. When you wake up or get out mid-sleep, it breaks and drops nothing.
  5. Use it while exploring: it is perfect for long trips, mining expeditions and the early game - skip phantom-heavy nights without losing your home spawn. Sleeping also prevents phantoms for three in-game days.
  6. Note the limits: straw beds don't work as villager beds (villagers ignore them for sleeping and breeding), they're not bouncy, and they don't reduce fall damage like hay bales do.
  7. Dimension quirk: unlike normal beds, straw beds do NOT explode in the Nether or the End - they simply destroy themselves and drop nothing.
  8. Compost the spares: a straw bed in a composter has a 65% chance of raising the compost level.

Java vs Bedrock

Available in both editions: Java 26.3 (snap3) and Bedrock 26.40 as part of the Drop 3 of 2026 experiment, fully implemented in 26.50. Mining is fastest with a hoe in both. One Bedrock-only quirk: the inventory icon is deliberately different from Java's.

Versions: Straw beds were added in Java Edition 26.3 (snap3) and in Bedrock Preview 26.40.30 behind the Drop 3 of 2026 experiment, becoming fully available in Bedrock 26.50 (Preview 26.50.22).

Frequently asked questions

Does a straw bed set your spawn point?

No - that's the whole point. Sleeping in a straw bed skips the night without touching your spawn, so your bed at home remains your respawn location.

Why did my straw bed disappear after sleeping?

Straw beds are single-use: they break and drop nothing when you wake up or leave the bed mid-sleep. Always carry a few spares - 3 hay bales craft 4 of them.

Do straw beds explode in the Nether?

No. Unlike regular beds, straw beds don't explode in the Nether or the End - they just destroy themselves and drop nothing when you try to sleep.

Can villagers use straw beds?

No. Straw beds don't count as beds for villager mechanics: villagers won't claim them, sleep in them, or need them for breeding.
