How to Make a Stonecutter in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft a stonecutter with one iron ingot above a row of three stone blocks. Use ordinary stone, not smooth stone, for the shared Java and Bedrock recipe. The stonecutter makes stairs, slabs, walls and other stone variants from a menu.

What you need

1 iron ingot
3 stone blocks (smelted cobblestone)

Step by step

Smelt three cobblestone once in a furnace to get three ordinary stone blocks. Do not smelt the stone again into smooth stone.
Gather one iron ingot and open a crafting table.
Put the iron ingot in the center slot of the middle row.
Fill the bottom row with three stone blocks and take the stonecutter.
Place it, open its menu and put a supported building block in the input slot.
Choose a listed output. Stone-type stairs usually give one stair per block, while slabs give two per block; check the displayed output before taking it.

Java vs Bedrock

Java uses three ordinary stone blocks and one iron ingot. Bedrock also accepts granite, diorite, andesite and their polished variants interchangeably. Using ordinary stone works in both editions. Stonecutting saves material for stairs (one per block instead of four stairs from six blocks); slab recipes have the same yield as crafting.

Frequently asked questions

Does the recipe use stone or smooth stone?

Ordinary stone. Smelt cobblestone once to get stone; a second smelt makes smooth stone, which is not the shared recipe ingredient.

Does a stonecutter always save material?

No. It saves blocks for stairs, but slabs have the same two-per-block yield as crafting. It also lets you make smaller batches.

Can I use andesite, granite or diorite?

Bedrock accepts these and their polished variants in the recipe. Use ordinary stone for Java, or for a recipe that works in both editions.
