How to Make a Quartz Pillar in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 2 regular quartz blocks for 2 pillars
- Or 1 regular quartz block per stonecutter conversion
- Stonecutter for single-block crafting (optional)
- Pickaxe to recover placed pillars
Step by step
- Get two regular blocks of quartz. Crafting them yourself requires eight nether quartz in total, four per block.
- Put one quartz block directly above the other in your inventory crafting grid or on a crafting table.
- Take two quartz pillars from the output. Use regular quartz blocks, not loose nether quartz or smooth quartz.
- For a single pillar, put one regular quartz block in a stonecutter and select the quartz pillar output.
- Place pillars vertically for columns or horizontally for beams. The block supports all three axes.
- Collect placed pillars with any pickaxe. Breaking them without a pickaxe drops nothing; Silk Touch is not required.
Java vs Bedrock
The crafting and stonecutting recipes work in Java and Bedrock. Two input blocks make two pillars through crafting; the stonecutter converts blocks one at a time with the same yield.

Frequently asked questions
How much nether quartz does one pillar cost?
Four nether quartz if you craft the regular quartz block yourself. Crafting pillars comes in batches of two; a stonecutter lets you make one.
Do quartz pillars need a furnace?
No. Use regular quartz blocks in a crafting grid or stonecutter. Smelting them produces smooth quartz instead.
Can quartz pillars lie sideways?
Yes. They can be placed on the vertical, east-west or north-south axis.
