How to Make Smooth Quartz in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Smelt a regular block of quartz in a furnace with fuel to make one smooth quartz block. Craft the regular block from four nether quartz first. Loose nether quartz is not the furnace ingredient for this recipe.

What you need

4 nether quartz per regular block of quartz
Furnace
Fuel such as coal or charcoal
Pickaxe to recover placed blocks

Step by step

Gather four nether quartz for each regular block of quartz you want to make.
Put the four nether quartz in a 2×2 square in your inventory or on a crafting table to make one block of quartz.
Place the regular block of quartz in the upper slot of a furnace.
Add fuel such as coal or charcoal to the lower slot. Take one smooth quartz block when smelting finishes.
Use smooth quartz for white walls, floors or modern builds. It can also be crafted into matching stairs and slabs.
Collect placed smooth quartz with any pickaxe. Breaking it by hand drops nothing; Silk Touch is not required.

Java vs Bedrock

Smelting regular quartz blocks into smooth quartz works in Java and Bedrock. Smooth quartz is a separate building block, not quartz bricks or a quartz pillar. Crafting a quartz block does not provide a reversible way to store nether quartz.

Frequently asked questions

Do I smelt nether quartz directly?

No. First craft four nether quartz into a regular block of quartz, then smelt that block.

Can a stonecutter make smooth quartz from regular quartz?

Use the furnace for this conversion. The stonecutter is useful for shaping building blocks, but does not replace the smelting recipe.

Does it need Silk Touch?

No. Any pickaxe drops the smooth quartz block itself.
