How to Make a Quartz Block in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft four nether quartz in a 2x2 square to make one block of quartz. Smelt that block in a furnace for smooth quartz, or use a stonecutter for pillars, bricks and chiseled quartz. Quartz blocks cannot be crafted back into nether quartz.

What you need

4 nether quartz per block
Furnace and fuel for smooth quartz
Stonecutter (optional, for variants)

Step by step

Collect four nether quartz for each block you need.
Put them in a 2x2 square in the inventory crafting grid or a crafting table and take one block of quartz.
For smooth quartz, put the block of quartz in a furnace with fuel. Smooth quartz is not the same block as ordinary quartz.
For decorative shapes, put an ordinary quartz block in a stonecutter: choose quartz pillar, quartz bricks, chiseled quartz, stairs or slabs.
Without a stonecutter, four quartz blocks in a 2x2 square give four quartz bricks; two quartz blocks stacked vertically give two quartz pillars.
Mine placed quartz blocks with any pickaxe. Keep spare nether quartz for redstone recipes, because you cannot unpack the block back into its ingredients.

Java vs Bedrock

The base 2x2 recipe and smelting work in Java and Bedrock. Java allows multiple ordinary quartz-block variants as inputs for crafting quartz stairs and slabs, while Bedrock uses the basic block of quartz. Using the basic block or a stonecutter avoids that recipe difference.

Frequently asked questions

Is smooth quartz made in a stonecutter?

No. Smelt a block of quartz in a furnace to make smooth quartz. A stonecutter makes decorative variants such as pillars and chiseled quartz.

Can I get nether quartz back from a quartz block?

No. It is not a reversible mineral-storage block.

Do I need Silk Touch to mine quartz blocks?

No. Any pickaxe collects a placed quartz block; mining without a pickaxe gives nothing.
