How to Make Bamboo Blocks in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 9 bamboo per block
- Axe (for the stripped variant)
- Crafting table
Step by step
- Harvest bamboo in jungle biomes (or fish it up there as junk loot) and plant it - it is the fastest-growing plant in the game.
- Craft 9 bamboo into 1 block of bamboo. Use an axe on it for the stripped variant.
- Turn each block of bamboo into 2 bamboo planks - they work like any wood planks for crafting tables, sticks and most wooden recipes.
- Craft the full bamboo wood set: stairs, slabs, fences, doors, trapdoors, signs, buttons, pressure plates and rafts.
- Special case: 2 bamboo slabs stacked vertically make a bamboo mosaic, the woven-texture block with its own mosaic stairs and slabs.
- Feed spare bamboo to pandas to breed them, or keep planting - a few stalks snowball into an infinite wood supply.
Java vs Bedrock
Same in Java and Bedrock: 9 bamboo per block, 2 planks per block, and the mosaic from 2 vertical slabs. The bamboo raft replaces the boat in this wood set in both editions.
Versions: Blocks of bamboo and the whole bamboo wood set arrived with Trails & Tales: Java 1.20 (previewed experimentally in 1.19.3, 22w45a) and Bedrock 1.20.0.
Frequently asked questions
Is bamboo better than wood?
For bulk building, often yes: bamboo regrows in minutes without saplings, and one block of bamboo makes 2 planks. The extra crafting step (bamboo -> block -> planks) means farms beat hand-harvesting by miles.
How do I get bamboo planks?
You cannot craft planks from raw bamboo directly - 9 bamboo make a block of bamboo first, and each block crafts into 2 bamboo planks.
What is bamboo mosaic for?
Purely decorative: a woven checker texture for floors and walls, with its own stairs and slabs. Its bamboo family cousin is the chiseled bookshelf, which is crafted from bamboo slabs.
