How to Make Beetroot Soup in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Combine 6 beetroots with a bowl to make beetroot soup - 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation, identical stats to mushroom stew. Beetroot comes from village farms or its seeds in chests.

What you need

6 beetroot
1 bowl

Step by step

Get beetroot: village farms grow it (plains and desert villages especially), or find beetroot seeds in dungeon, mineshaft and village chests.
Plant the seeds and let them grow through four stages - harvest when the beetroot tops turn dark red.
Craft a bowl from 3 planks.
Place 6 beetroots in the top two rows of the crafting table with the bowl at the bottom.
Eat for 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation - exactly mushroom-stew-tier food.
The bowl comes back after eating, and like all stews it does not stack.
Leftover beetroot? Dye things red, breed pigs, or trade it to farmer villagers.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical in Java and Bedrock: 6 beetroots + 1 bowl, 6 hunger and 7.2 saturation, non-stacking with the bowl returned. Beetroot itself grows the same way in both editions.

Versions: Beetroot soup is a Bedrock original: it debuted in Pocket Edition v0.8.0 and only came to Java in 1.9 (15w31a). The recipe has been 6 beetroots plus a bowl since Pocket v0.9.0.

Frequently asked questions

Is beetroot soup worth making?

Stat-wise it matches mushroom stew (6 hunger, 7.2 saturation), so it is fine - but 6 beetroots per bowl makes it expensive unless you run a beetroot farm. Most players grow beetroot for red dye and pig breeding instead.

Where do I find beetroot seeds?

Village farms are the fastest source - just harvest the beetroot already growing there. Seeds also show up in dungeon, mineshaft, woodland mansion and village chests, and end city chests can hold beetroot too.

Beetroot soup or mushroom stew?

Same hunger and saturation, same bowl back, same no-stacking. Mushroom stew wins on ingredient effort (2 mushrooms vs 6 beetroots), beetroot soup wins if your base is already a beetroot empire.
