How to Make Brick Stairs in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Arrange six bricks in a staircase shape on a crafting table to make four brick stairs. A stonecutter gives one stair per bricks block, so it uses fewer blocks for the same number of stairs.
What you need
- 6 bricks blocks for 4 stairs on a crafting table
- Or 1 bricks block per stair in a stonecutter
- Crafting table or stonecutter
- Pickaxe to recover placed stairs
Step by step
- Get finished brick blocks: smelt clay balls in a regular furnace, then craft four brick items in a 2×2 square into one bricks block. Individual brick items are not the input for this recipe.
- Open a crafting table. Put one bricks block in the top-left slot, two across the left side of the middle row, and three across the bottom row.
- Take four brick stairs from the output. The recipe consumes six blocks.
- For better material efficiency, put bricks in a stonecutter and select brick stairs. Each block makes one stair.
- Use the stairs for steps or decorative roofs and edges. Choose the crafting route only if you do not have a stonecutter available.
- Mine placed stairs with any pickaxe to collect them. Breaking them by hand drops nothing.
Java vs Bedrock
Both recipes work in Java and Bedrock. Four stairs cost six blocks with crafting, but only four blocks with stonecutting. The stonecutter is the more efficient route for large builds.

Frequently asked questions
Is the stonecutter more efficient for stairs?
Yes. It gives one stair per block. Crafting uses six blocks to make four stairs.
How many blocks do I need for 64 stairs?
64 bricks blocks with a stonecutter, or 96 blocks through sixteen crafting-table batches.
Can I use individual brick items?
No. Craft four brick items into a full bricks block first, then use that block for the shape recipe.
