How to Make a Fire Charge in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 blaze powder per batch (1 blaze rod = 2 powder)
- 1 coal or charcoal per batch
- 1 gunpowder per batch (creepers, ghasts, witches, or piglin bartering)
Step by step
- Get blaze powder from blaze rods (Nether fortress blazes).
- Get gunpowder from creepers, ghasts or witches.
- Craft anywhere in the grid: blaze powder + 1 coal or charcoal + 1 gunpowder = 3 fire charges.
- Use it by hand to place fire exactly like flint and steel - but the charge is consumed. It lights Nether portals, campfires, candles, TNT and even creepers (Java).
- Load fire charges into a dispenser and power it: each charge fires a small fireball, the same projectile blazes shoot.
- That dispenser trick makes automatic Nether portal lighters and blaze-style arrow towers.
Java vs Bedrock
Identical in Java and Bedrock, including the 3-charge recipe and dispenser fireballs. Java-only detail: fire charges can light creepers by hand. They are also one of the possible piglin bartering outputs.
Versions: Added in 1.2.1 (12w04a) alongside the fire charge's dispenser behavior. Fun fact: blazes shoot small fireballs but never drop fire charges.
Frequently asked questions
What is a fire charge used for?
Two jobs: a single-use flint and steel (lighting portals, campfires, candles, TNT) and dispenser ammunition that shoots blaze-style small fireballs - the base of auto-lighting portal designs and fireball turrets.
Is a fire charge better than flint and steel?
Flint and steel has 65 uses; a fire charge has 1. Charges win only when a machine must do the lighting (dispensers) or when your flint and steel breaks at the worst moment in the Nether.
Can you throw a fire charge by hand?
No. Right-clicking with a fire charge only places fire at the target block. The fireball shot exists exclusively through dispensers.
