How to Make Glass Panes in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 6 glass blocks (from smelting sand or red sand)
- Crafting table
- Furnace + fuel (to make the glass)
Step by step
- Smelt sand or red sand in a furnace or blast furnace with any fuel: 1 sand gives 1 glass.
- Collect at least 6 glass blocks for one batch of panes.
- Open a crafting table and fill the bottom two rows completely with 6 glass blocks.
- Take the 16 glass panes from the result slot - each batch of 6 glass makes 16 panes.
- Use panes for windows: they are far cheaper than full blocks (1 pane costs 0.375 glass) and connect into thin transparent walls.
- Stained glass panes: stain the glass blocks first (8 glass around 1 dye), then craft those into panes; panes cannot be dyed directly.
Java vs Bedrock
The recipe is identical in Java and Bedrock: 6 glass to 16 panes. In both editions, glass panes drop nothing when broken without Silk Touch, same as glass blocks.
Versions: 1.8 (Beta, added with glass panes)
Frequently asked questions
How many glass panes does 6 glass make?
16 panes. Since a full window pane wall uses 1 pane per block position, panes are almost 3 times more efficient than full glass blocks.
Do glass panes drop when broken?
Only with a Silk Touch tool. Otherwise they shatter and drop nothing, same as glass blocks.
Can you dye glass panes?
Not directly. Dye the glass blocks into stained glass first (8 glass around 1 dye), then craft those into stained glass panes.
What connects to glass panes?
Panes connect to solid blocks and other panes on their sides, forming thin cross or line shapes. They do not connect diagonally or to the top and bottom of blocks.
