How to Make a Jukebox in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Planks x8 (any wood)
- Diamond x1
- Crafting table
Step by step
- Gather 8 planks (any wood, mixed is fine) and 1 diamond.
- Craft the jukebox: planks filling every slot except the center, diamond in the middle.
- Get discs: creepers killed by a skeleton's arrow drop random music discs; others hide in dungeons, ancient cities, bastions and trial chambers. Disc 5 is crafted from 9 disc fragments found in ancient cities.
- Play a disc: use a music disc on the jukebox. The music plays once and is audible up to 64 blocks away; use the jukebox again to eject the disc.
- Automate playback: hoppers and droppers can insert and remove discs, so a redstone clock can run a non-stop music machine.
- Read it with redstone: while a disc plays, the jukebox emits a signal strength 15; a comparator reads a per-disc strength (each disc has its own value) as long as the disc sits inside, even after the music ends.
- Make parrots and allays dance: tamed parrots and allays within 3 blocks of a playing jukebox start dancing.
- Duplicate an allay: use an amethyst shard on an allay that is dancing to a playing jukebox - it splits into two, consuming the shard. Both get a 5-minute cooldown before duplicating again.
Java vs Bedrock
Recipe, playback, dancing and allay duplication work the same in Java and Bedrock. Comparator output values per disc are also shared.
Versions: Added in Alpha v1.0.14 (2010) alongside the first music discs. Allays dancing (and duplication) arrived in 1.19.1 (22w24a); note particles above playing jukeboxes in 1.19.4.
Frequently asked questions
How do you get music discs in Minecraft?
The classic method: get a skeleton to kill a creeper with its arrow - the creeper drops a random music disc. Others (13, cat, pigstep, otherside, 5 and more) come from dungeon, woodland mansion, ancient city, bastion and trial chamber chests; disc 5 is crafted from 9 disc fragments.
How do you duplicate an allay in Minecraft?
Play any music disc in a jukebox, wait for a nearby allay to start dancing (within 3 blocks), then use an amethyst shard on it. The allay splits into two and the shard is consumed. Each allay then has a 5-minute cooldown.
Can a jukebox power redstone?
Yes. While a disc is playing, the jukebox emits power 15 to adjacent redstone, and a comparator reads a signal strength specific to the inserted disc - useful for disc-activated doors and secret triggers.
