How to Make Mud Bricks in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft packed mud from 1 mud + 1 wheat, then craft 4 packed mud into 4 mud bricks. Mud comes from water bottles on dirt (or mangrove swamps). Mud bricks also make stairs, slabs and walls - the perfect brown desert-ruin building block.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Get mud: use a water bottle on any dirt block (dirt, coarse dirt or rooted dirt), or dig it straight out of a mangrove swamp with a shovel.
  2. Craft packed mud: 1 mud + 1 wheat anywhere in the grid makes 1 packed mud. Wheat comes from any small wheat farm.
  3. Craft mud bricks: 4 packed mud in a 2x2 square gives 4 mud bricks. Any pickaxe mines them - other tools drop nothing.
  4. Expand the set: mud bricks craft (or stonecut) into mud brick stairs, slabs and walls - the stonecutter wastes nothing.
  5. Alternative source: mud bricks generate naturally inside trail ruins, so archaeology trips double as a building-material run.
  6. Scale up with automation: a dispenser firing water bottles at dirt makes mud hands-free - see our clay farm guide for the full dripstone cell design that also renews the raw material.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical recipes and behavior in Java and Bedrock.

Versions: Added in Java 1.19 and Bedrock 1.19.0 (The Wild Update, 2022) alongside mud, mangrove swamps and the mud-to-clay dripstone mechanic.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between mud, packed mud and mud bricks?

Mud is the raw block (from dirt + water bottle). Packed mud is mud + wheat - a building block itself. Mud bricks are 4 packed mud crafted together - the polished brick version with stairs, slabs and walls.

Are mud bricks renewable?

Fully. Dirt is renewable (coarse dirt + hoe), water bottles are endless, and wheat grows in days - so a mud brick supply never runs dry.

Do mud bricks need a specific pickaxe?

Any pickaxe works, even wooden. Mining them with anything else (or bare hands) breaks the block without dropping it.
