How to Make Planks in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Put one log or Nether stem in any crafting slot to get four matching planks. No crafting table is needed. Bamboo is the exception: one block of bamboo makes two bamboo planks.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Break a tree log by hand or use an axe to gather it faster. For crimson or warped planks, collect the corresponding huge fungus stem in the Nether.
  2. Open your inventory crafting grid and put one log or stem in any slot. The recipe is shapeless and works in the small 2x2 grid.
  3. Take the four matching planks. Stripped logs, wood blocks, stripped wood, stems and hyphae also work for their matching wood type.
  4. For bamboo planks, first obtain a block of bamboo, then put that block in a crafting slot. Each block gives two planks, not four; stripped bamboo blocks work too.
  5. Use four planks in a square to make a crafting table and unlock the larger 3x3 grid.
  6. Keep the wood types consistent when making wood-specific blocks such as doors, stairs and slabs. Generic recipes such as sticks and a crafting table allow mixed types.

Java vs Bedrock

The basic recipe works in Java and Bedrock. Available wood types depend on your version. Crimson and warped planks do not burn, cannot fuel a furnace and cannot make boats. Overworld planks can fuel a furnace, smelting 1.5 items per plank.

Frequently asked questions

Why can I not make planks from a stick?

Sticks cannot be turned back into planks. Start with a log, wood block, stem, hyphae or block of bamboo.

Do I need a crafting table to make planks?

No. Put the raw wood block in any slot of your inventory crafting grid. One log or stem makes four matching planks.

Can I mix different plank types in a recipe?

For generic items such as sticks and a crafting table, yes. Wood-specific products such as doors, stairs, slabs and fences require matching planks.

Why does bamboo give only two planks?

That is the bamboo recipe: one block of bamboo or stripped bamboo yields two bamboo planks. Ordinary logs and Nether stems yield four.
