How to Make a Shelf in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 6 matching stripped logs (or stripped stems / stripped bamboo blocks) filling the top and bottom rows for 6 shelves. A shelf displays 3 item stacks like a wall of item frames - and powered with redstone, it swaps your whole hotbar at once.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Strip 6 logs of the same wood: right-click regular logs with an axe. Stems (crimson/warped) and blocks of stripped bamboo work too.
  2. Craft the shelves: fill the top and bottom rows of the crafting table with your 6 stripped logs, leaving the middle row empty. You get 6 shelves per craft - one of 13 wood variants, poplar included since 26.3.
  3. Place a shelf on a wall and use any of its 3 slots to swap your main-hand item with what's stored. Items show on the front like item frames, full stacks included (the count isn't displayed).
  4. Power it with redstone and everything changes: using a powered shelf swaps its 3 slots with the 3 rightmost slots of your hotbar - an instant loadout switch.
  5. Chain up to 3 powered shelves side by side (facing the same way; they connect left first): two connected shelves swap 6 hotbar slots, three swap all 9 at once.
  6. Read it with a comparator facing its back: items in the left, middle and right slots emit signal 1, 2 and 4, adding up to 7 - a tiny analog memory cell.
  7. Automate it: hoppers and droppers fill shelves left to right (stacking into one slot until full), and a hopper underneath pulls items back out.
  8. Fuel note: Overworld wood shelves smelt 1.5 items each in a furnace; crimson and warped shelves don't burn at all.

Java vs Bedrock

Same recipe and redstone behavior in both editions. Two splits: pistons can't move shelves in Java, and in Bedrock a shelf only activates on the Input/Consume redstone tick (C-tick).

Versions: Added in 1.21.9 (Java snapshot 25w31a) and Bedrock 1.21.111 (Preview 1.21.110.20) with The Copper Age drop - 12 wood variants at launch. The poplar shelf arrived in 26.3 with the dappled forest.

Frequently asked questions

What does a shelf do in Minecraft?

It stores and displays up to 3 item stacks like a wall-mounted item frame. Unpowered, using a slot swaps it with your hand; powered by redstone, using it swaps the shelf's contents with your hotbar - up to all 9 slots with three connected shelves.

How do you swap your hotbar with a shelf?

Power the shelf with any redstone signal, then use it: its 3 slots exchange with your 3 rightmost hotbar slots. Connect two powered shelves for 6 slots or three for the full hotbar.

Can hoppers fill a shelf?

Yes: hoppers and droppers insert items left to right, stacking into one slot until full, and a hopper placed under the shelf extracts them. Comparators read filled slots as signal 1+2+4.
