How to Get Poplar Logs in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- An axe (any tier; logs break by hand too)
- Shears for the colored leaves (optional)
- Poplar saplings for your own grove
- Bone meal to speed up growth (optional)
Step by step
- Find a dappled forest: it's the autumn-colored forest biome added in the Drop 3 of 2026 - poplars generate naturally only there.
- Spot the poplars: look for tall trunks with especially large canopies in red, orange or yellow. Some trunks carry shelf mushrooms on their sides.
- Check fallen poplars too: this biome has more fallen trees than any other - fallen trunks (4-7 logs) and vine-covered stumps are free logs without even climbing a canopy.
- Chop the trunk: an axe makes it faster, and the canopy drops saplings (and the leaves come in three collectible colors with shears).
- Gather saplings: poplar saplings drop from the leaves like any tree - take several home.
- Plant your own: saplings grow on dirt, grass, podzol, moss, mud and similar blocks, need light level 9+ and empty space above, and bone meal speeds them up.
- Note the density quirk: poplars grow more densely in Bedrock than in Java, so Bedrock forests yield logs faster per visit.
Java vs Bedrock
The only real difference is density: poplars generate more densely in Bedrock than in Java. Version timing also differed - Bedrock previewed them behind the Drop 3 of 2026 experiment in 26.40 before they went vanilla in 26.50, while Java added them directly in 26.3 snapshots.
Versions: Poplars were announced at Minecraft Live in May 2026 and added in Java 26.3 and Bedrock 26.40 (experimental) / 26.50 (vanilla), as part of the Drop 3 of 2026.
Frequently asked questions
Where do poplar trees grow in Minecraft?
Only in the dappled forest biome. They come in three leaf colors - red, orange and yellow - and the biome also has unusually many fallen poplar trunks to harvest.
Can you grow poplar trees yourself?
Yes: plant poplar saplings on dirt-type blocks, grass, moss or mud with light level 9 or higher and space above. Bone meal accelerates growth like with other trees.
What are poplar logs used for?
Everything other logs do: planks, and from there the full wood set - stairs, slabs, fences, doors and the rest. The light brown tone is the draw for builders.
What are the mushrooms on poplar trees?
Shelf mushrooms - they grow on the sides of standing and fallen poplar trunks in dappled forests, sometimes alongside regular red and brown mushrooms.
