How to Stop Copper From Oxidizing in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Use a honeycomb on the copper block (or craft the block with a honeycomb) to wax it. Waxed copper never oxidizes. Use an axe to remove wax first and then oxidation, one layer per use. Covering copper or keeping it away from water does not stop oxidation.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Get honeycomb from beehives or bee nests with shears, or from a bee farm.
  2. Right-click an unwaxed copper block with a honeycomb, or craft the block with a honeycomb, to turn it into its waxed variant. Waxed blocks look the same as unwaxed ones.
  3. Wax each block you want to keep. Oxidation only uses random ticks, so you cannot slow it by covering the blocks or by keeping water away.
  4. To remove wax, use an axe on the waxed block. The honeycomb is not returned.
  5. To clean oxidation, use an axe on an exposed, weathered or oxidized copper block. Each use removes one layer, going back one stage at a time. The axe removes wax first, then oxidation.
  6. A lightning strike on a non-waxed copper block removes all oxidation from it and may clean nearby blocks.
  7. Oxidation goes through four stages: unoxidized, exposed, weathered and oxidized.
  8. Remember that oxidation can change behavior: only unoxidized copper blocks craft back into copper ingots, and copper bulb light level drops with oxidation (15, 12, 8, 4).

Java vs Bedrock

Oxidation is random-tick based in both editions. In Java Edition, groups of unwaxed copper blocks oxidize far more slowly than single blocks spaced at least 4 blocks apart, because nearby lower-oxidation blocks hold the others back.

Versions: Waxing and axe scraping apply to all oxidizing copper blocks and to copper golems.

Frequently asked questions

How do you stop copper from oxidizing?

Wax it with a honeycomb. Waxed copper never oxidizes.

How do you remove oxidation from copper?

Use an axe. It removes wax first, then one oxidation layer per use. A lightning strike on non-waxed copper also removes all oxidation.

Does water or rain speed up oxidation?

No. Oxidation relies only on random ticks, and covering copper with other blocks does not prevent it.

Does waxed copper look different?

No. Waxed blocks have the same texture as unwaxed ones.

Does the honeycomb come back when I scrape wax off?

No. The honeycomb is not returned.
