Why Your Anvil Says 'Too Expensive' in Minecraft (And How to Fix It)
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- An anvil and a grindstone
- Enchanted books, ideally combined before touching the tool
- Enough XP for the displayed cost, up to 39 levels for ordinary Survival work
Step by step
- The cause: repair/enchantment jobs increase prior work based on the larger input penalty. Both input penalties contribute to the next job, along with its repair/enchantment cost. Renaming alone does not raise prior work.
- The cap: ordinary Survival repair and enchantment jobs costing 40 levels or more show Too Expensive. Creative ignores this cap. Java rename-only work is capped at 39 levels rather than being refused at that threshold.
- Combine books and gear in a balanced order, pairing items with similar prior-work penalties where possible. Compare the displayed costs, including swapping the two slots when both orders are valid. One giant combined book is not always cheapest.
- Compare slot order: for valid combinations, swapping the inputs can change which enchantments are charged. Check the result and cost instead of following an expensive-first rule for every setup.
- Renaming: it costs XP but does not increase prior work when done alone. Adding the name during a repair or enchantment job avoids a separate rename operation; there is no need to always rename last.
- Prevention 4 - enchanting table first: get as many enchantments as possible from the table itself, then only add what is missing by anvil.
- Grindstone reset: removes prior-work penalty and non-curse enchantments, refunding some XP. Curses remain. Rebuild the enchantments with a balanced plan.
- Mending saves the day: a Mending tool never needs replacement, so plan the enchant order once, pay it once, and repair with XP forever.
- Incompatible enchantments cannot both apply to the same item. Check the preview: some combinations are refused, while others keep the target enchantment and do not transfer the incompatible one.
Java vs Bedrock
Ordinary Survival repair/enchantment work must cost less than 40 levels in both editions. Exact enchantment costs differ. Renaming alone does not raise prior work; Java limits rename-only cost to 39 levels.

Frequently asked questions
What does 'Too Expensive' mean in Minecraft?
An ordinary Survival repair or enchantment job would cost 40 or more levels. The total includes prior-work penalties and the work itself. Java rename-only work is instead capped at 39 levels.
Can I remove the prior work penalty?
A grindstone removes prior work and non-curse enchantments while keeping curses. Crafting-grid repair also resets prior work but removes non-curse enchantments. Mending repairs durability without adding prior work.
What is the cheapest order to combine enchantments?
Combine books and gear in a balanced order, pairing items with similar prior-work penalties where possible. Compare the displayed costs, including swapping the two slots when both orders are valid. One giant combined book is not always cheapest.
