All 9 Wolf Variants in Minecraft (And Where to Find Them)

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Wolves come in 9 variants, one per biome: Pale (taiga), Woods (forest), Ashen (snowy taiga), Black (old growth pine taiga), Chestnut (old growth spruce taiga), Rusty (sparse jungle), Spotted (savanna plateau), Striped (wooded badlands), Snowy (grove). Tame any of them with bones.

What you need

Bones from skeletons (a stack is plenty)
Meat to heal and breed your wolves after taming
Wolf armor from armadillo scutes for adventuring

Step by step

Pale - taiga, packs of 4. The classic wolf look from before the variants update.
Woods - forest, packs of 4. The most common variant by biome coverage.
Ashen - snowy taiga, packs of 4.
Black - old growth pine taiga, packs of 2-4.
Chestnut - old growth spruce taiga, packs of 2-4.
Rusty - sparse jungle, packs of 2-4.
Spotted - savanna plateau, the biggest packs at 4-8.
Striped - wooded badlands, packs of 4-8.
Snowy - grove, always spawns alone: the lone-wolf variant.
Taming: hold bones and use them on the wolf until hearts appear - anywhere from 1 to a dozen bones. The red collar (dyeable) marks a tamed wolf.
Collecting tip: breed two variants and the puppy takes one parent's variant at random - breed your rare finds instead of hiking for duplicates.

Java vs Bedrock

Snowy wolves spawn solo in groves, so finding one takes patience - check grove biomes on mountain slopes.

Versions: All 9 variants exist on Java and Bedrock since 1.20.5. Wolves spawned by eggs or commands in jungles use Rusty; badlands eggs give Striped.

Frequently asked questions

How many wolf variants are there?

9: Pale, Woods, Ashen, Black, Chestnut, Rusty, Spotted, Striped and Snowy - each tied to its own biome.

Can I get every variant without exploring?

Almost: breed two wolves of different variants and the puppy randomly inherits either parent's variant. You still need to find each variant once.

Do wolf variants behave differently?

No - the differences are purely cosmetic. Health, damage and taming are identical across all 9.
