Best Y Level for Every Ore in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Coal Y=95 or mountain tops, copper Y=48, iron Y=15 or Y=232, gold Y=-16 (badlands surface), lapis Y=0, redstone Y=-59, diamond Y=-59, emerald Y=232 in mountains, ancient debris Y=15 in the Nether. Since 1.18, ores peak at different heights instead of one universal level.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Coal: Y=95 is the triangle peak, and mountains above Y=136 are packed with it - exposed coal skips 50% of air-exposed spots, so cave coal is rarer than it looks.
  2. Copper: Y=48, in a triangle from -16 to 112 - dripstone caves get extra-large copper veins.
  3. Iron: two peaks - Y=15 (triangle -24 to 56) underground, and Y=232 (triangle 80 up past 320) on mountain faces. Mountains are the iron jackpot.
  4. Gold: Y=-16 in a triangle from -64 to 32. In badlands, gold generates 32-256 at huge rates right on the surface - mine badlands instead.
  5. Lapis: Y=0 at the triangle center (-32 to 32); a second buried batch spans -64 to 64 and never touches air.
  6. Redstone: uniform from -64 to 15 plus a triangle peaking toward the bedrock floor - mine at Y=-59 and you get redstone and diamonds together.
  7. Diamond: Y=-59, just above bedrock - the triangle runs -64 to 16 and gets denser the deeper you go. Half of air-exposed diamonds are skipped, so strip-mine instead of caving.
  8. Emerald: Y=232 peak, only in mountain and windswept biomes (-16 to 480 triangle) - look on high slopes, not underground.
  9. Ancient debris: Y=15 in the Nether - a tiny triangle 8-24 plus a sparse uniform spread 8-119, generated away from air. Beds or TNT at Y=15 are the classic blast-mining setup.
  10. Nether quartz and nether gold: uniform from 10 to 117 everywhere, with extra in basalt deltas.

Java vs Bedrock

Y=-59 remains the universal deep-mining floor on both editions: diamonds, redstone, lapis and gold all overlap there.

Versions: These ranges are the 1.18+ world generation and are current on Java and Bedrock as of 2026. Small per-edition quirks exist (extra coal batch in mountain biomes differs slightly).

Frequently asked questions

What is the best Y level for diamonds?

Y=-59. Diamond generation is a triangle from -64 to 16 that thickens toward bedrock, and mining at -59 keeps you just above the lava-rich bedrock layers. Strip-mine rather than cave: air-exposed ore has a 50% chance to be skipped.

Did ore levels change in 1.18?

Yes - the Caves and Cliffs update stretched the world to Y=-64 and Y=320 and gave every ore its own distribution curve. The old 'mine at Y=11 for everything' advice is obsolete.

Where is ancient debris most common?

Y=15 in the Nether. It never generates exposed to air, so you will not find it in open nether caves - blast or branch-mine through netherrack at that height.
