Quick answer: Blast Protection is an armor enchantment (max level IV) that cuts explosion damage by 8% per level - creepers, TNT, ghast fireballs, beds in the Nether, end crystals, wither skulls, even firework rockets - and in Java adds 15% explosion knockback resistance per level. It cannot combine with Protection, Fire Protection or Projectile Protection.

Step by step

Enchant armor at the table. Any armor piece can roll Blast Protection up to IV with a full bookshelf setup.
Or use an anvil. Blast Protection books come from librarian trades, structure chests and fishing treasure. Combine same-level books up to IV.
Count what it blocks. Creeper hugs, charged creepers, TNT, ghast fireballs, beds and respawn anchors used in the wrong dimension, end crystals, the wither's spawn explosion and its skulls, firework rockets, and wind charges - 8% off per level, 32% at IV.
Use the knockback bonus. In Java each level also grants 15% explosion knockback resistance, stacking across pieces - a full Blast Protection set barely moves when a creeper pops next to you. Essential for crystal PvP and end crystal fights.
Place it where explosions live. It is mutually exclusive with the other protections, so dedicate one piece to it: it shines in the End (crystals), the Nether (beds, ghasts), ancient city runs (shrieking panic creepers) and PvP servers with crystals.

Java vs Bedrock

Explosion damage reduction is 8% per level, up to 32% on one Blast Protection IV piece. Java also grants 15% explosion knockback resistance per level, stacking across pieces. Do not confuse reduced knockback with protection from later fall damage.

Frequently asked questions

Blast Protection or Protection?

Protection for everyday everything; Blast Protection when explosions are the threat - end crystal PvP, mining with beds in the Nether, wither fights, creeper farms. One Blast Prot piece in a Protection set is the classic compromise.

Does Blast Protection stop ghast fireballs?

It reduces the explosion component of a ghast fireball. The direct impact is projectile damage, which Projectile Protection covers instead. Fire Protection does not reduce either component, though it can help with fire left by the explosion.

Does it help against the warden's sonic boom?

No. The Warden's sonic boom bypasses armor and Protection enchantments, including Blast Protection. Do not treat this enchantment as protection against that attack.
