How to Get a Camel Husk in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Camel husks spawn only in deserts at night or during thunderstorms, always as a camel husk jockey: a spear-wielding husk riding it with a parched passenger. Kill or knock off both riders and the camel husk turns passive - then saddle it and ride it like a normal camel.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Hunt deserts at night: camel husks never spawn alone - they appear as camel husk jockeys. In Java, 10% of naturally spawned husks arrive riding one; Bedrock spawns jockeys by its own weight. Not on Peaceful difficulty.
  2. Spot the jockey: a husk with an iron spear up front and a parched (desert skeleton) shooting weakness arrows from behind. The husk drives; if it dies or dismounts, the parched takes the reins.
  3. Kill the riders, not the mount: fight carefully - you want the camel alive. The parched's weakness arrows make melee awkward, so use a shield or pick the riders off from range.
  4. Interact to keep it: until a player interacts with it, the camel husk counts toward the monster cap and can despawn. Any interaction (riding, leashing, feeding) makes it permanent.
  5. Saddle up: once both riders are gone it behaves exactly like a camel - saddle it, ride it, lead it (only when you're dismounted), name-tag it. It doesn't burn in sunlight.
  6. Care for it: camel husks can't breed (they're undead) - heal and tempt them with rabbit's feet instead. They shrug off 6-block falls, take half fall damage, and slowly regenerate on their own.

Java vs Bedrock

The spawn mechanics differ: Java converts 10% of natural husk spawns into jockeys (one per pack), while Bedrock spawns camel husk jockeys by spawn weight. Bedrock camel husks also don't panic when damaged, and the husk rider there has a 50% chance to drop a rabbit foot. Being undead, they're healed by Instant Damage and hurt by Instant Health in both editions - watch your splash potions.

Versions: Added in Java 1.21.11 and Bedrock 1.21.130 (late 2025 previews), with natural spawning fixed in a later Bedrock preview. Baby camel husks existed briefly in Java snapshots and were removed before 26.1.

Frequently asked questions

Where do camel husks spawn?

Only in desert biomes, at night or during thunderstorms - and always as a camel husk jockey: a husk with an iron spear riding it, with a parched passenger. They never spawn alone or on Peaceful.

Can you tame and ride a camel husk?

Yes: kill or dismount both riders and the camel husk becomes passive. Saddle it and it rides exactly like a normal camel - it doesn't even burn in sunlight.

Can you breed camel husks?

No - camel husks are undead and can't breed. Heal and tempt them with rabbit's feet; they also regenerate health slowly and take reduced fall damage.

Do camel husks despawn?

They can - they count toward the monster cap until the first time any player interacts with them (riding, leashing, feeding...). After that interaction they're permanent and no longer count toward any cap.
