How to Get Deepslate in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Mine below Y=0 in the Overworld with any pickaxe. An ordinary pickaxe drops cobbled deepslate; Silk Touch drops the original deepslate block. You can also smelt cobbled deepslate in a furnace to get deepslate.

What you need

Any pickaxe (better tiers speed up gathering)
Silk Touch pickaxe or furnace and fuel for regular deepslate
Torches, food and blocks for a safe staircase

Step by step

Head underground in the Overworld and check your Y coordinate. Deepslate replaces stone in the transition from Y=8 to Y=0 and dominates below Y=0.
Make a staircase down rather than digging straight beneath your feet. Bring light, food and spare pickaxes for the return trip.
Mine the dark grey rock with a pickaxe. Even a wooden pickaxe works for the base block, but ores embedded in it can need a higher tool tier.
Choose the drop you need: without Silk Touch you get cobbled deepslate; with Silk Touch you get deepslate itself.
If you already have cobbled deepslate, put it in a furnace with fuel to smelt it into deepslate.
For building variants, use a stonecutter. Current 26.x versions accept regular deepslate as well as cobbled deepslate for the decorative family.

Java vs Bedrock

The mining drops and smelting route work in Java and Bedrock. Regular deepslate became a stonecutter input in Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10; on older versions, use cobbled deepslate instead. Deepslate takes twice as long to mine as stone with the same tool.

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between deepslate and cobbled deepslate?

Deepslate is the natural, directional rock block. Cobbled deepslate is its rough mining drop when you do not use Silk Touch. Smelting turns the cobbled block back into deepslate.

Can a wooden pickaxe mine deepslate?

Yes, a wooden pickaxe can harvest the base deepslate block. That does not mean it can harvest every deepslate ore: the ore still has its own required pickaxe tier.

Can I turn regular deepslate into bricks or tiles?

In current versions, use the stonecutter. Java 26.1 and Bedrock 26.10 added regular deepslate as an input for cobbled and decorative variants. On earlier versions, begin with cobbled deepslate.
