How to Make Stone in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Smelt cobblestone in a furnace to get stone: 1 cobblestone plus any fuel gives 1 stone. Stone is the base for stone bricks, smooth stone, slabs, stairs, and redstone components like repeaters and comparators.

What you need

Cobblestone (from mining stone without Silk Touch)
Furnace or blast furnace
Fuel (coal, charcoal, wood, lava bucket)

Step by step

Mine cobblestone with any pickaxe. It drops when you mine natural stone without Silk Touch, so every mining trip produces it.
Place a furnace and add any fuel: coal, charcoal, logs, planks, or a lava bucket.
Put cobblestone in the top slot of the furnace. Each cobblestone smelts into 1 stone.
Speed it up with a blast furnace: it smelts stone-related blocks twice as fast, ideal for big building projects.
Use stone for stone bricks (4 stone in a 2x2 square), stone slabs and stairs, redstone repeaters and comparators, and as a clean building block.
Smelt stone a second time to get smooth stone, the ingredient for blast furnaces and smooth stone slabs.

Java vs Bedrock

The smelting recipe is identical in Java and Bedrock: 1 cobblestone gives 1 stone. With Silk Touch you can mine stone blocks directly and skip the smelting in both editions.

Versions: Classic (smelting since the earliest versions)

Frequently asked questions

What is the difference between stone and cobblestone?

Cobblestone is the rough block that drops when you mine stone. Smelting it turns it back into smooth gray stone, which is needed for stone bricks, repeaters, and comparators.

How do you get stone without a furnace?

Mine natural stone with a Silk Touch pickaxe: the block drops as stone instead of cobblestone.

How do you make smooth stone?

Smelt regular stone in a furnace. Cobblestone becomes stone, and stone becomes smooth stone, so it is two smelting passes from cobblestone.

What can you craft with stone?

Stone bricks, stone slabs, stairs and walls, stone buttons and pressure plates, redstone repeaters, redstone comparators, and brewing stands (with a blaze rod).
