How to Make Stone Bricks in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Craft 4 stone bricks from 4 stone in a 2x2 square on a crafting table, or put 1 stone in a stonecutter for 1 stone brick. Stone comes from smelting cobblestone in a furnace.

What you need

4 stone (smelted from cobblestone), or 1 stone per brick in a stonecutter

Step by step

Mine cobblestone with any pickaxe.
Smelt the cobblestone in a furnace to get stone.
Open a crafting table.
Place 4 stone in a 2x2 square anywhere in the grid.
Take the 4 stone bricks.
Alternative: place 1 stone in a stonecutter to cut 1 stone brick directly.

Java vs Bedrock

The 2x2 crafting recipe is identical in Java and Bedrock, and both editions cut stone bricks from stone in a stonecutter. Only Bedrock can also cut them straight from cobblestone, skipping the smelting step. Stone bricks generate naturally in strongholds, igloo basements, cold ocean ruins and some ruined portals, and their variants are easy to make: smelt stone bricks for cracked stone bricks, craft them with vines for mossy stone bricks, and craft 2 stone brick slabs together for chiseled stone bricks.

Frequently asked questions

How do you get stone in Minecraft?

Smelt cobblestone in a furnace with any fuel. Mining stone directly with a Silk Touch pickaxe also drops stone instead of cobblestone.

Can you make stone bricks without a crafting table?

Yes, with a stonecutter: 1 stone becomes 1 stone brick, which is more efficient per block than the 4-for-4 crafting recipe and skips the grid entirely. In Bedrock the stonecutter even accepts cobblestone.

How do you make cracked and mossy stone bricks?

Smelt regular stone bricks in a furnace for cracked stone bricks, and craft stone bricks together with a vine (or a moss block) for mossy stone bricks.
