How to Get Podzol in Minecraft

What you need

• Silk Touch tool (a shovel is fastest)
• 4 spruce saplings for the renewable method
• Bone meal (optional)
• Suitable ground and room for a large spruce tree

Step by step

1. Search an old growth taiga or bamboo jungle for the brown, leaf-covered ground blocks.
2. Use a Silk Touch tool to collect podzol intact. A shovel is fastest; without Silk Touch you get ordinary dirt.
3. To make podzol at home, plant four spruce saplings in a 2x2 square on suitable ground with enough space for a large tree.
4. Let the tree grow or use bone meal. The large spruce converts nearby topmost dirt, grass, moss and other suitable ground blocks into podzol.
5. Collect the new podzol with Silk Touch and replant more large spruce trees as needed. Podzol does not spread on its own.
6. Use it to plant mushrooms even in bright light. To make farmland instead, use a shovel to turn podzol into dirt path before tilling the path with a hoe.

Java vs Bedrock

Both editions support Silk Touch gathering and large-spruce generation. The exact ground-conversion footprint differs: Java can reach six blocks toward positive X/Z and five toward negative X/Z; Bedrock reaches at most five horizontally in each direction. Podzol does not become dirt merely because a solid block sits on top.
