How to Make Copper Tools in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Copper tools use the standard patterns with copper ingots: pickaxe (3 ingots + 2 sticks), axe (3 + 2), shovel (1 + 2), hoe (2 + 2) and sword (2 + 1). They sit just above stone: durability 190, mining level 1, and better speed and enchantability.

What you need

Copper ingots (1-3 per tool)
Sticks
Crafting table

Step by step

Smelt copper ingots from raw copper - copper ore generates from Y=-16 to Y=112, richest around Y=48.
Craft each tool with the classic patterns, swapping in copper ingots: pickaxe = 3 ingots across the top + 2 sticks; axe = 3 ingots + 2 sticks; shovel = 1 ingot + 2 sticks; hoe = 2 ingots + 2 sticks; sword = 2 ingots + 1 stick.
Know the tier: copper tools have mining level 1 (same as stone), so they mine iron, copper and lapis ore - but not diamond, gold or redstone.
Enjoy the perks over stone: 190 durability instead of 131, faster mining and higher enchantability.
Repair worn tools with copper ingots in an anvil, or smelt them into copper nuggets to recycle the metal.

Java vs Bedrock

Same recipes in Java and Bedrock. Copper tools have 190 durability in Java and 191 in Bedrock, and the sword deals 5 damage in Java versus 6 in Bedrock - the tier otherwise behaves identically.

Versions: Copper tools arrived in the Fall Drop 2025: Java 1.21.9 (25w31a) and Bedrock 1.21.100. Since 26.3 they can also generate in abandoned camp chests.

Frequently asked questions

Are copper tools better than iron?

No - copper sits between stone and iron. It beats stone on durability, speed and enchantability, but iron still wins on mining level (diamond, gold, redstone), durability and damage.

Can copper tools mine diamonds?

No. Mining level 1 covers stone-tier blocks: iron, copper, lapis and their deepslate variants. You still need an iron pickaxe for diamond, gold, redstone and emerald ore.

Do copper tools oxidize?

No - only placed copper blocks oxidize. Tools, weapons and armor in item form keep their shine forever.
