How to Make a Copper Chest in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Copper ingot x8
- Chest x1 (8 planks)
- Crafting table
- Stone pickaxe or better to relocate it
Step by step
- Craft a regular chest first: 8 wooden planks of any type in a ring around an empty center.
- Gather 8 copper ingots: smelt copper ore, which generates everywhere in the Overworld and most densely in dripstone caves.
- Craft the copper chest: place the chest in the middle slot and fill all 8 surrounding slots with copper ingots.
- Mine it correctly: only a stone pickaxe or better drops the copper chest itself - a weaker tool (or your hand) breaks it and drops just the contents.
- Double it up: two copper chests placed side by side merge into a large copper chest with 54 slots. Even mismatched oxidation stages merge - the large chest takes the least-oxidized half's look.
- Team it with a copper golem: a golem with empty hands visits up to 10 copper chests (within 32 blocks horizontally and 8 vertically) and takes out up to 16 of the first item it finds to sort into normal chests.
- Spawn-craft one instead: place a carved pumpkin or jack o'lantern next to a block of copper to spawn a copper golem - the copper block transforms into a copper chest matching the block's oxidation.
- Wax to taste: combine the chest with honeycomb in the grid (or use honeycomb on the placed chest) to stop the patina at any stage.
- Watch for piglins: in the Nether, piglins turn hostile if you open or break any copper chest near them, exactly like wooden chests.
Java vs Bedrock
Both editions share the recipe, golem sorting and oxidation. Differences: pistons cannot move copper chests in Java, and the GUI title reads 'Chest' in Java but 'Copper Chest' in Bedrock. Bedrock also lets you wax chests by crafting from Preview 1.21.110.23 onward.
Versions: Added in 1.21.9 (Java snapshot 25w31a) and Bedrock 1.21.100 as an experimental Drop 3 2025 feature, leaving experiments in 1.21.111. Since 26.3, oxidized copper chests generate naturally in abandoned camps.
Frequently asked questions
What does a copper chest do in Minecraft?
It stores items exactly like a wooden chest (27 slots, 54 as a double) but oxidizes through four color stages - and it's the chest copper golems empty when they sort your items into wooden chests.
How do you get a copper chest without crafting?
Spawn a copper golem by placing a carved pumpkin next to a block of copper: the block turns into a copper chest with the same oxidation. Oxidized copper chests also generate in abandoned camps since 26.3.
Do copper chests oxidize?
Yes, through exposed, weathered and oxidized stages. Wax with honeycomb to freeze the look, scrape with an axe while sneaking to remove a stage, or let lightning strip it. Oxidation never affects storage.
