How to Make a Purpur Pillar in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
Quick answer: Place two purpur slabs one above the other in a crafting grid to make one purpur pillar. A stonecutter also converts one purpur block directly into one pillar. Use slabs for the crafting recipe, not two full purpur blocks.
What you need
- 2 purpur slabs per pillar
- Or 1 purpur block with a stonecutter
- Crafting table if making slabs from blocks
- Pickaxe to collect placed pillars
Step by step
- Get purpur slabs. Three purpur blocks in a horizontal row on a crafting table make six slabs.
- Put one purpur slab directly above another in your inventory crafting grid or on a crafting table.
- Take one purpur pillar from the output. The recipe uses two slabs, not two full blocks.
- For a direct route, put one purpur block in a stonecutter and select purpur pillar. This gives one pillar without making slabs first.
- Place pillars vertically for columns or sideways for beams. They can be oriented like logs or quartz pillars.
- Mine placed purpur pillars with any pickaxe to collect them. Without a pickaxe they drop nothing.
Java vs Bedrock
The slab crafting recipe and direct stonecutter conversion work in Java and Bedrock. Unlike quartz pillars, which are crafted from two full quartz blocks, purpur pillars use two slabs for the crafting route.

Frequently asked questions
Why do two full purpur blocks not make a pillar?
The crafting recipe requires two purpur slabs stacked vertically. Use a stonecutter to convert a full purpur block directly.
Do I need a crafting table for the final recipe?
No. Two slabs fit vertically in the inventory crafting grid. Making slabs from three blocks does require a table.
Can purpur pillars be placed sideways?
Yes. Use them as horizontal beams or vertical columns.
