How to Make Purpur Blocks in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Smelt chorus fruit into popped chorus fruit, then craft 4 of them in a 2x2 square to get 4 purpur blocks. Purpur also generates naturally in End cities and End ships, and crafts into slabs, stairs and pillars.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Break chorus plants on the End's outer islands to collect chorus fruit.
  2. Smelt chorus fruit in a furnace: each one becomes one popped chorus fruit.
  3. Craft 4 popped chorus fruit in a 2x2 square to get 4 purpur blocks.
  4. Craft purpur blocks into purpur slabs and stairs, and place two slabs vertically to make purpur pillars. A stonecutter also cuts purpur blocks into all variants.
  5. Alternative: mine purpur directly from End cities and End ships with a pickaxe - the whole structure is built from it.

Java vs Bedrock

Identical in Java and Bedrock: 4 popped chorus fruit in 2x2 yield 4 purpur blocks, and both crafting and stonecutting give slabs, stairs and pillars.

Versions: Purpur blocks were added in the Combat Update (1.9, 2016) as the signature building block of End cities. Popped chorus fruit has been the only ingredient since launch.

Frequently asked questions

What is popped chorus fruit used for?

Exactly two things: crafting purpur blocks (2x2 for 4 blocks) and crafting end rods (with a blaze rod). It cannot be eaten or un-smelted.

Is purpur renewable?

Yes. Chorus fruit farms (chorus flowers on end stone) grow in any dimension, so purpur is an infinite building material once you set up a farm.

How do I make purpur pillars?

Place two purpur slabs one above the other in the crafting grid, or cut a purpur block in a stonecutter. Pillars are decorative only - same blast resistance as the base block.
