How to Get Fire Protection in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Armor piece (any tier, turtle shells included)
- Enchanting table + bookshelves, or anvil + Fire Protection book
- XP levels
- Lava lake (optional, for celebrating)
Step by step
- Enchant armor at the table. Helmets, chestplates, leggings and boots can all roll Fire Protection up to IV. Turtle shells too. Use 15 bookshelves for level 30 rolls.
- Or use an anvil. Fire Protection books come from librarian trades, structure chests and fishing treasure. Combine two same-level books to climb toward IV.
- Know what it covers. Standing in fire, swimming in lava, magma blocks, lit campfires, blaze fireballs, flaming arrows and burning zombie hits - 8% less damage per level, so IV on one piece takes 32% off every fire hit.
- Exploit the burn-time bonus. Each level also cuts your burning time by 15% (max 60% per piece at IV). Total level 7 across your set - say IV + III - means 100% burn reduction: lava still hurts, but you never keep burning after you get out.
- Pick one protection per piece. Fire Protection is mutually exclusive with Protection, Blast Protection and Projectile Protection. A common endgame mix: Protection on three pieces, Fire Protection on one Nether piece.
Java vs Bedrock
Works the same in Java and Bedrock: 8% fire damage reduction per level plus 15% burn-time reduction per level. One trap: blaze and magma cube contact hits count as melee damage, not fire - Fire Protection does nothing for those.
Versions: Fire Protection has existed since enchantments launched in Beta 1.9 Prerelease 3 (2011). Its 8%-per-level formula and the burn-time bonus have survived every rebalance since.
Frequently asked questions
Fire Protection or Protection for the Nether?
Fire Protection if lava is your main fear - it cuts lava damage and, at total level 7+, stops the burning afterward. Protection is the better generalist for fortresses full of wither skeletons and blaze melee. Ideally: one Fire Protection piece, the rest Protection.
Does Fire Protection work against the blaze fireball?
Yes - blaze projectiles are fire damage and get reduced. But a blaze bumping into you deals melee damage, which Fire Protection does not touch.
Can I become fully fireproof?
For burning, yes: total Fire Protection level 7 across armor pieces gives 100% burn-time reduction - you take no afterburn at all. Direct lava and fire contact still deals reduced damage, so pair with a Fire Resistance potion for true immunity.
