How to Make Copper Bars in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- Copper ingot x6 (makes 16 bars)
- Crafting table
- Any pickaxe to relocate them
- Honeycomb (optional, to stop oxidation)
Step by step
- Smelt copper ingots: mine copper ore (common in dripstone caves and around Y=48) and smelt it, or salvage copper gear. You need 6 ingots per craft.
- Craft the bars: fill the top and middle rows of a crafting table with copper ingots - 6 ingots give 16 copper bars, the same ratio as iron bars.
- Place them like iron bars: they connect to each other and to solid blocks, making windows, railings, cages and drain covers. They are transparent and waterloggable.
- Mine them back with any pickaxe - even wooden. Without a pickaxe, the bar breaks and drops nothing.
- Watch them age: unwaxed copper bars slowly oxidize from orange to spotted exposed, then green weathered, then teal oxidized. It's purely cosmetic.
- Control the patina: use an axe to scrape off one oxidation stage, or craft/use honeycomb on the bars to wax them and lock the current color forever.
- Use lightning as a reset: lightning strikes clean oxidation from nearby copper - a lightning rod on your copper roof doubles as free maintenance.
- Wax before you build: you can wax bars in your inventory by combining them with a honeycomb in the crafting grid, so pre-aged sets stay consistent.
Java vs Bedrock
Identical in Java and Bedrock: same recipe, same four oxidation stages, same axe-scraping and honeycomb waxing. Both editions waterlog copper bars and let lightning strip oxidation.
Versions: Added in 1.21.9 (Java snapshot 25w32a) and Bedrock 1.21.111 (Preview 1.21.110.23) as part of The Copper Age drop. Weathered texture retouched in later snapshots.
Frequently asked questions
How many copper bars do you get from crafting?
16 bars from 6 copper ingots - exactly like iron bars. One stack of ingots makes over 10 stacks of bars, so copper is a very cheap fencing material.
Do copper bars oxidize?
Yes: they pass through exposed, weathered and oxidized stages over time. Wax them with honeycomb to freeze any stage, or scrape with an axe to go back one stage.
What pickaxe do you need for copper bars?
Any pickaxe, including wooden. Mining them by hand or with the wrong tool destroys the bar without dropping it.
