How to get Hero of the Village

Kill a raid captain (the pillager with the ominous banner on its head, found in patrols or at pillager outposts) to get Bad Omen.
Walk into a village with Bad Omen active - the raid starts immediately. In current versions you drink the ominous bottle instead: the effect no longer applies on kill.
Defend the village: the raid has 3 waves (Easy), 5 (Normal) or 7 (Hard), scaling with difficulty. Ring the bell to highlight raiders through walls.
Kill at least one raider yourself - the advancement requires your participation, not just an iron golem doing the work.
Survive until the victory message: you get Hero of the Village (hidden advancement), big trading discounts from every villager, and gifts thrown at you.

Tips

Walling the village first trivializes most waves - raiders pathfind to beds and villagers. Bring a totem for vindicators and evokers on Hard, and watch for witches healing the raiders in later waves.
