Quick answer: The heart and story of the game

Advancements are exclusive to Java Edition. The Bedrock Edition equivalent is achievements, which have different objectives.

Punch a tree and turn the logs into planks.
Craft a crafting table from 4 planks in your 2x2 inventory grid.
Pick the crafting table up into your inventory: simply having one completes this silent root advancement and opens the whole Minecraft tab.

Root advancements give no chat message or toast, so do not wait for a fanfare: the tab simply appears in your advancement screen (press L).
