How to get Suit Up

Mine iron ore: it generates at almost every height, with extra ore in mountain peaks around Y=232 and a second rich band deep underground around Y=16. A stone pickaxe or better is enough.
Smelt the raw iron in a furnace or blast furnace into iron ingots. A full set costs 24 ingots; boots are the cheapest piece at 4.
Craft any piece of iron armor at a crafting table.
Pick the piece up: the advancement triggers the moment any iron armor piece sits in your inventory. You don't even have to wear it.

Tips

Armorer villagers sell iron armor for emeralds, village armorer chests can contain iron pieces, and zombies or skeletons occasionally drop them. Any way of getting one into your inventory counts.
