Not Today, Thank You

Tab: MinecraftDifficulty: Easy

Quick answer: Deflect a projectile with a Shield

Tree path: Minecraft › Stone Age › Getting an Upgrade › Acquire Hardware › Suit Up › Not Today, Thank You (advancements are independent: they can be completed in any order; the tree only guides progression)

Tree parent: Suit Up

Advancements are exclusive to Java Edition. The Bedrock Edition equivalent is achievements, which have different objectives.

How to get Not Today, Thank You

  1. Craft a shield: 6 planks of any wood and 1 iron ingot in a Y shape.
  2. Hold the shield in either hand and hold right-click (use) to raise it.
  3. Face a skeleton, drowned with trident or any mob firing projectiles and let one hit your raised shield.
  4. Blocking any projectile completes the advancement.

Tips

The shield blocks all frontal projectile damage and softens melee hits, but watch out for axes: a hit from one disables your shield for 5 seconds. Arrows from Piercing crossbows also go straight through it.
