Craft a bucket (3 iron) and fill it with water.
Use the water bucket directly on the axolotl, like catching a fish.

Tips

A bucketed axolotl never despawns, so always carry one home. Hunt alongside it for underwater mining fatigue removal, and remember the blue axolotl only comes from breeding: a 1 in 1200 chance.
