How to get Best Friends Forever

Pick a tameable animal: Wolf (bones), Cat (raw cod or salmon), Parrot (any seeds), Horse, Donkey, Mule or Llama (repeated riding), among others.
For a wolf: collect bones from skeletons, find one in a taiga or forest, and feed bones until hearts appear and it gets a red collar.
For horses and llamas: right-click to mount repeatedly until it stops bucking you off and shows hearts.

Tips

A tamed wolf is the most useful first pet: it fights beside you and teleports to you. Tame several and you have a small army for the Monsters Hunted grind.
