How to get Diamonds!

Go deep: diamond ore generates in the deepslate layers, and the sweet spot is Y=-59, just above the bedrock floor.
Bring an iron pickaxe or better. Stone and wood break the ore without dropping anything.
Branch mine at Y=-59 or explore the huge caves that open down there, and mine the diamond ore you find.
Pick the diamonds up: the moment one sits in your inventory, the advancement completes.

Tips

A Fortune III pickaxe more than doubles the yield of each ore, so enchant before mining a big vein. Diamonds also show up in chests in villages, shipwrecks, buried treasure, bastion remnants and end cities, and a water bucket is essential insurance against the lava lakes at that depth.
