How to get Ice Bucket Challenge

  1. Get a diamond pickaxe (or netherite): obsidian can't be collected with anything weaker.
  2. Find lava: surface lava pools, the lava aquifers deep underground, or the Nether if you're already there.
  3. Pour water from a bucket onto a lava SOURCE block: the source turns into obsidian. Flowing lava turns into cobblestone instead, so always target the still blocks.
  4. Mine the obsidian with the diamond pickaxe (about 9.4 seconds per block) and pick it up. Having it in your inventory completes the advancement.

Tips

No diamonds yet? Obsidian also generates in ruined portals and their chests, in bastion remnant chests, in village weaponsmith chests, and piglin bartering can hand it over. You only need one block.
