How to Make Cut Sandstone in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Put four regular sandstone blocks in a 2×2 square to make four cut sandstone blocks. A stonecutter also turns one sandstone block into one cut sandstone. Do not smelt it: the furnace makes smooth sandstone instead.

What you need

4 regular sandstone blocks for 4 cut sandstone
Or 1 regular sandstone per stonecutter conversion
Stonecutter for single-block crafting (optional)
Pickaxe to collect placed blocks

Step by step

Get regular sandstone. If starting from sand, craft four sand in a 2×2 square to make each sandstone block.
Gather four sandstone blocks for the crafting route.
Place the four blocks in a 2×2 square in your inventory or on a crafting table. Take four cut sandstone blocks.
For a single block, put one regular sandstone in a stonecutter and choose cut sandstone. The output is one block.
Use cut sandstone for pale walls and borders. Unlike sand, it stays in place without a block underneath.
Recover placed cut sandstone with any pickaxe. It drops nothing if you break it by hand.

Java vs Bedrock

The crafting and stonecutter routes work in Java and Bedrock. Both preserve the block count. Cut sandstone and smooth sandstone are separate variants: crafting or stonecutting makes cut sandstone, while smelting regular sandstone makes smooth sandstone.
