How to Make Smooth Sandstone in Minecraft
Guide Java Bedrock
What you need
- 1 regular sandstone per smooth sandstone block
- Furnace
- Fuel such as coal or charcoal
- Pickaxe to collect placed blocks
Step by step
- Get regular sandstone. You can craft one sandstone block from four sand in a 2×2 square.
- Open a furnace and put the sandstone in its upper ingredient slot.
- Place fuel such as coal or charcoal in the lower slot.
- Wait for the smelting to finish and take the smooth sandstone from the output slot. Each input block gives one output block.
- Use smooth sandstone for pale walls, floors or desert builds. It can also be made into matching stairs and slabs.
- Mine placed smooth sandstone with any pickaxe to recover it. Breaking it by hand drops nothing.
Java vs Bedrock
The furnace recipe works in Java and Bedrock. Smooth sandstone and cut sandstone are different blocks: smooth sandstone uses smelting, while cut sandstone uses crafting.

Frequently asked questions
Why did I get glass instead?
You smelted sand. First craft sandstone from four sand, then smelt that sandstone block.
Is smooth sandstone the same as cut sandstone?
No. They are separate variants with different textures and recipes.
Do I need Silk Touch to mine it?
No. Any pickaxe collects smooth sandstone as itself.
