How to Make Sandstone in Minecraft

Guide Java Bedrock

Quick answer: Put four sand in a 2x2 square to make one sandstone. Use four red sand instead for red sandstone. To make the smooth variant, smelt the matching sandstone in a furnace; stonecutting makes cut or chiseled variants, not smooth sandstone.

What you need

Step by step

  1. Collect four sand for each sandstone block, or four red sand for each red sandstone. Keep the two recipes separate.
  2. Open the inventory crafting grid or a crafting table. Fill a 2x2 square with the same sand type and collect one sandstone.
  3. For a mining route, look beneath desert or beach sand for regular sandstone. Mine it with any pickaxe; other tools do not give the block.
  4. Put sandstone in a furnace with fuel to make smooth sandstone. Red sandstone similarly smelts into smooth red sandstone.
  5. Use a stonecutter on regular sandstone for cut sandstone, chiseled sandstone, slabs, stairs or walls. Use smooth sandstone as the input for smooth stairs and slabs.
  6. Place sandstone where you need a solid sandy-looking build that does not fall under gravity. You cannot craft it back into sand.

Java vs Bedrock

The sand recipes and smelting routes work in Java and Bedrock. Regular sandstone generates under desert and beach sand and in structures such as desert pyramids. Red sandstone natural generation has edition-specific details, so crafting from red sand is the dependable route in both editions.

Frequently asked questions

How do I make smooth sandstone?

Smelt regular sandstone in a furnace with fuel. Four sand make sandstone first, then the furnace makes it smooth. Red sandstone makes smooth red sandstone the same way.

Is cut sandstone the same as smooth sandstone?

No. They are separate blocks. A stonecutter makes cut sandstone from sandstone, while a furnace makes smooth sandstone.

Can I turn sandstone back into sand?

No. The four-sand recipe is one-way, so sandstone is not a reversible storage block.

Does sandstone fall like sand?

No. Regular, red and smooth sandstone are solid building blocks that are not affected by gravity.
